New Kilmarnock manager Steve Clarke says he is not giving his players too many new instructions ahead of his first match in charge against Rangers.

Clarke was appointed as Lee McCulloch's successor last week and brings a wealth of experience to the struggling side.

He said he was being cautious with the information he was giving his squad in the early days as they get used to working together.

"Initially it's a little 'get to know you'," he said. "They have to know how I would like them to work.

"There's been good work on the training pitch and hopefully I haven't given them too much information that they're going to forget.

"You try to give them enough information to maybe improve one or two things without going overboard. You can't bombard them with too much."

As well as getting to know his new players, Clarke has been giving himself a crash course in Scottish football after decades in England with Chelsea, Newcastle, Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa.

"I think it's important for me," he said. "I've been out of the Scottish game for a long time so I went to Murrayfield.

"It was strange to go to Murrayfield to watch a game of football but I watched Hearts against St Johnstone. On Sunday I was up at Hampden to watch Motherwell against Rangers.

"That's four teams to see straight away and I've already seen Partick Thistle so I'm already starting to get a feel for some of the teams in the league. I think it's important to have that knowledge going forward."
