Scotland will be without scrum-half and captain Greig Laidlaw for the autumn test series in November after he suffered a broken leg.

Scans revealed 32-year-old fractured his fibula while on club duty with Clermont Auvergne.

Laidlaw was a second half replacement for Morgan Parra in Clermont's Champions Cup victory over Ospreys on Sunday.

After complaining of discomfort with his ankle, a scan on Tuesday revealed the bad news for the 58-cap skipper.

A statement on the Clermont Auvegne website said: "The injury does not require surgery but the duration of his unavailability is estimated between ten and 12 weeks."

Scotland start their autumn series against Samoa at Murrayfield on Saturday, November 11, before welcoming New Zealand to Edinburgh on the 18th and finishing the three-test run with the visit of Australia on November 25.

Laidlaw last featured for Scotland on February 13, when he suffered an ankle injury against France in Paris that ruled him out for the remainder of the Six Nations.

He missed the summer tour of Singapore, Australia and Fiji after being drafted into Warren Gatland's British and Irish Lions squad.

Glasgow Warriors scrum-half Ali Price has been preferred in the position in Laidlaw's absence.
