Hibs boss Neil Lennon says Gordon Strachan was right to bemoan Scotland's genetic disadvantage, insisting poor athleticism has held back the national side over the years.

Strachan, whose time in charge of the national side was brought to an end on Thursday, faced criticism for his claim.

It came after his charges fell foul to two set plays in Slovenia as their World Cup qualification dream was tarnished.

Lennon agreed with Strachan, however, saying the Scots lack "a van Dijk" or "a Bale".

He said: "I understand what Gordon was saying about the genetics. He was talking more about the physicality and athleticism of the players, which has been a bugbear up here for a while.

"Scotland don't have a dominant centre half, a van Dijk type, and they don't have a Bale.

"But they do have very good players and will be disappointed with that second half.

He added: "We always look at the manager first and foremost but the players need to look at themselves as well.

"It's feast to famine with Scotland. After the Slovakia game Gordon is a hero and then two days later people want him out of the job."

When asked if the vacant Scotland role would interest him, Lennon suggested international football is more suitable to more senior professionals.

"I think it's an older manager's job," he said.

"The gap between the games is huge, I find it hard enough filling my time between games here at Hibs never mind months between them."

Meanwhile, Lennon insists his Hibs players have to match the standard set in the 2-2 draw with Celtic before the international break.

John McGinn's double put the Edinburgh side on the verge of ending Celtic's undefeated run but Callum McGregor hit back for Celtic.

Speaking ahead of Aberdeen's visit to Easter Road on Saturday, he said: "The Celtic performance didn't surprise me and the boys have no excuses now.

"That's the level they can play at and the quality of performance they can produce.

"The way they handled the game and the circumstances was everything I wanted and what I knew I could get from the the team. They now need to maintain that level and if they do, we'll have a great season."
