Rangers' glamour friendly against Benfica, which was scheduled to take place in Hamilton, Canada on Friday, October 6, has been cancelled.

The club have issued a statement confirming the Portuguese side have pulled out of the agreement to meet in North America but are yet to provide an explanation.

The sides were due to play against each other during the international break while Scotland take on Slovakia and Slovenia in 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Rangers had arranged to fly to Canada on Tuesday but were only informed of Benfica's decision on Saturday evening.

The club say they are taking legal advice and apologise to supporters who had made arrangements to travel for the fixture.
