Brendan Rodgers reflected on his side's 2-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox and praised his players' defensive qualities.

Second-half goals from Tom Rogic and Leigh Griffiths earned Celtic the three points but the manager highlighted how his team had nullified Rangers attack and said that was the foundation for the win.

"I thought defensively we were outstanding today in terms of our pressing and denying them the opportunity to play," he said. "First and foremost that's what you have to do.

"We started very well but in the final third of the pitch we just didn't make the last pass, which could have put us ahead earlier. We worked our way through into the game and I thought second half the condition and the quality of the players came through.

"It was a very, very good performance coming here and it was a great atmosphere today. The boys coped with it very well."

Celtic have been in prolific scoring form in recent domestic matches and were 5-1 winners when they played at Ibrox in April. Asked if the scoreline showed that Rangers were getting closer to narrowing the gap, Rodgers was non-committal but said his side could possibly have scored more in the match.

"I don't know [if Rangers are getting closer]," he said. "We can't win every game by five or six but I think we showed a great level of performance and management of the game today.

"We knew it was going to be tough. Pedro's changed it and brought in a lot of new players and obviously they're going to believe that they can challenge.

"For us, we had to come here for the first of these types of games this season and we were outstanding.

"We scored two, could have had more but importantly, we were strong defensively as well."
