Gordon Strachan says it is vital his Scotland side use brains not brawn against England because the "get intae them" tactic no longer works.

His side take on the Auld Enemy at Hampden on Saturday in the 2018 World Cup qualifier as they look to keep their chances of reaching Russia next summer alive.

They currently sit fourth in Group F, six points behind the Three Lions, and also trailing Slovakia and Slovenia.

The Scotland manager says fans have urged him to use the physical approach in games, especially against teams deemed more talented, but it is not what he will be telling his players to do because the game has changed.

"We were speaking about it the other day," he said.

"The 'get intae them' kind of theory, which a lot of people in Scotland are desperate for us to do when I meet them as I go about.

"But the 'intae them' theory died with the pass back rule and the tackle from behind, better pitches."

He added: "So that weapon that we had years ago where 'get intae them' was well and truly used, it is not used as much now.

"You can't do that, you have to think your way through games; interceptions, being brave on the ball.

"I wish we could use the 'get intae them' theory but we can't use that any more."
