Former Inverness Caley Thistle midfielder Barry Wilson says it's vital the club appoint a "real football man" because he feels they have lost their way in recent years.

The Highlanders were relegated on the final day of the 2016/17 campaign and will play their football in Scotland's second tier for the first time since 2010.

They appointed Willie Finlayson as chairman just hours after Kenny Cameron stood down.

Speaking to STV, Wilson said things need to change behind the scenes at the club.

"I don't know the new chairman, I don't know the new directors that have come on board but what I'm told is none of them are real football guys," he said.

"I think it's important they get a real football man. I know they've spoken about a general manager and I think that's a really good idea.

"There needs to be a connection with the board and management level. If they get that they could get the club back on track because I think it's maybe just lost it's way a little bit in the last few years."

Wilson is also tipping his former teammate Paul Sheerin for the manager's position.

Richie Foran was sacked from his role in charge of the club on Monday.
