Scottish referee Willie Collum has been appointed as a video assistant referee for next month's Under-20 World Cup in South Korea.

FIFA are using video technology to assist referees in a major tournament for the first time and Collum will review "match-changing" decisions before providing information to the official on the field of play.

Based in a video operations room at the stadium, video assistant referees will not make decisions themselves but will give their view on footage of major incidents including goals, penalty decisions, direct red cards and cases of mistaken identity as FIFA trial the system before reaching a decision on a wider roll-out.

"I will be utilised to help rectify major errors in the game and improve the standard of decision making," Collum said.

"I attended the FIFA candidates' course in Florida and we had the chance to work as a referee with a VAR as well as being a VAR, working with a referee.

"It was really successful so I'm looking forward to seeing it being utilised at a major finals."

He added: "There is a demand for some kind of use of technology in football at the moment so I hope these trials are successful.

"I'd imagine IFAB and FIFA will make a decision quite early in 2018 with the hope of using video assistant referees at the forthcoming World Cup in Russia.

"It's good to be involved at the Under-20s World Cup as it means I can bring back things to my colleagues in Scotland. It's all part of an education process."
