Hearts have signed striker Esmael Goncalves for a fee of around £170,000.

The 25-year-old completed the move from Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta on Monday after a fresh bid of €200,000 (£171,000) was tabled last week.

He is expected to train with his new teammates for the first time on Tuesday and could be included in the squad to face Rangers in their Premiership clash on Wednesday night.

It is manager Ian Cathro's third signing of the day after securing the services of Greek pair Alexandros Tziolis and Anastasios Avlonitis earlier on Monday.

Goncalves' move to Hearts will see him reunited with his former Rio Ave coach Ian Cathro and assistant Austin MacPhee, who helped bring the player to St Mirren on loan in 2013.

Goncalves enjoyed a fruitful spell with the Buddies, netting eight goals in 16 games, including the opener in the 3-2 League semi-final victory over Celtic.

St Mirren went on to win the cup with a 3-2 victory over Hearts at Hampden, with Goncalves scoring.

The Portugal-born forward has scored seven goals in 19 appearances this season, including one in Anorthosis' 5-0 cup win over ASIL last week.

He becomes Cathro's ninth signing of the January transfer window, following Aaron Hughes, Lennard Sowah, Malaury Martin, Andraz Struna, Dylan Bikey and Moha El Ouriachi Choulay all signed for the capital club this month, with five players heading out the exit door.
