Aberdeen coasted past League One strugglers Stranraer at Pittodrie to reach the fifth round of the Scottish Cup and keep hopes alive of their first triumph in the competition since 1990.

Dons manager Derek McInnes showed his intent by fielding the same team which won three consecutive Scottish Premiership matches prior to the winter break, and it turned out to be a long afternoon for the part-timers.

Adam Rooney and Niall McGinn both netted in each half as the Dons, recently back from warm weather training in Dubai, won 4-0 in a one-sided contest.

Andrew Considine squandered a fifth-minute chance for the hosts when he sent a free header over the crossbar from McGinn's corner.

Both goalkeepers were then called into action shortly after, Aberdeen's Joe Lewis saving low down to his right to deny Willie Gibson before Cammy Belford pulled off an outstanding stop to keep out McGinn's header.

Stranraer had been fairly comfortable until they fell behind in the 30th minute thanks to a Rooney strike. McGinn crossed to the far post for Jonny Hayes, who rose to nod the ball down for Rooney and his 12-yard shot gave Belford no chance.

McGinn quickly doubled the Dons' lead with a well-taken goal in the 34th minute. The Northern Irishman latched on to a Kenny McLean lay-off before before driving a low 16-yard effort inside the far corner of the net.

Only good goalkeeping from Belford kept the score down at the interval, which could not come quickly enough for the visitors.

When Rooney scored his second and Aberdeen's third five minutes into the second half, it turned into a damage limitation exercise for the Stair Park club, who this week parted company with boss Brian Reid. On-loan Livingston defender Morgyn Neill was penalised for handling a Hayes cross and Rooney converted the resultant spot-kick.

There was no stopping the rampant Reds as McGinn lashed in a 14-yard left-footed effort from Andrew Considine's cutback in the 54th minute.

Hayes, the subject of two recent failed bids from Sky Bet Championship side Cardiff, was replaced by Peter Pawlett in the 64th minute and Dons supporters will be hoping it was not a farewell appearances from the flying winger.

Morton extended their unbeaten streak to six games with a 2-0 Scottish Cup fourth-round win over Falkirk.

Goals either side of the break from Jamie Lindsay and Ross Forbes either side of the break saw them past their fellow Ladbrokes Championship side.

Mark Russell dragged an early effort wide for the hosts before Gary Oliver could not hit the target with another chance for Morton.

James Craigen then went through one-on-one for the visitors but was denied by Morton goalkeeper Derek Gaston.

Gaston then tipped and effort from Craig Sibbald over the bar before Morton went ahead in the 39th minute when Oliver's cross was headed back across the face of goal by Forbes and Lindsay arrived to slam home from six yards.

And they doubled their advantage two minutes into the second half after Russell played in Oliver and his cross to the back post was turned in by Forbes at the second attempt.

Thomas O'Ware then headed another Forbes cross narrowly wide as Morton comfortably progressed.

St Johnstone ensured there would be no shock as they pieced together a comfortable 2-0 Scottish Cup victory over Stenhousemuir.

First-half goals from Steven MacLean and Blair Alston killed off any hopes the visitors had of springing a surprise and the Premiership hosts cruised to victory.

The League One strugglers will have been pleased to have put up a fight in the second period but there was never any real danger of Saints losing their grip on the tie and progressing to the fifth round.

Stenhousemuir, currently second bottom of League One, suffered the worst possible start when Saints took the lead after just five minutes.

Chris Millar delivered a pinpoint cross from the right edge of the box and MacLean ghosted away from his marker all too easily to head in from six yards.

A Danny Swanson drive that drifted inches past in the 20th minute was the closest St Johnstone came before they added a second in the 32nd minute.

Graham Cummins flicked on a high ball for strike partner MacLean and the opening goalscorer's back-heel teed up Alston to fire in from the edge of the box.

Cummins should have added a third in the 70th minute as Stenhousemuir's resistance at the start of the second half began to wane.

Alston's low cross from the right was perfect for the Irishman but somehow he scooped his shot wide from just six yards.

David Wotherspoon saw a 20-yard drive deflected wide as St Johnstone looked to put some gloss on their win.

Manager Tommy Wright introduced Liam Craig and Chris Kane in search of some fresh impetus as the game limped towards full-time.

However, with Alston's injury-time volley being deflected over and Kane's shot on the turn being booted off the line, Stenhousemuir earned credit when they saw out the tie without conceding again.

Lonsana Doumbouya spared Inverness Caledonian Thistle's blushes as his second-half header edged them past League Two Elgin 2-1 in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.

Despite him missing a glut of earlier chances, an under-strength Inverness had Doumbouya to thank to ensure their safe passage into the next round.

Mark Nicolson had given Elgin the lead with a low free-kick in the first half before Larnell Cole's immediate leveller.

And Guinean Doumbouya headed the decisive goal midway through the second half to oust the plucky Borough Briggs side.

Elgin made only one change from their 3-2 win over Annan, with Cammy Mackay, ineligible to play against his parent club, replaced in goal by Marc Waters.

The Caley Jags sprang a couple of surprises, leaving out Ross Draper and Josh Meekings entirely from the squad. There were starts for Scott Boden and Aaron Doran, with new signings Dean Ebbe and Henri Anier on the bench.

Elgin settled well and briefly pressured the Inverness backline before the visitors edged themselves into the game. Cole, in particular, started well and turned Elgin right-back Matthew Cooper with ease before seeing his shot blocked.

Waters was the first goalkeeper to be called into action, palming a long-range effort from Greg Tansey into the air before catching it at the second attempt.

Cole then saw his low effort blocked by the legs of Waters as Elgin held Caley Thistle at bay.

Yet it was Inverness who conceded first after 25 minutes. Iain Vigurs needlessly hauled down Chris McLeish just outside the area and Nicolson's free-kick, which trundled around the wall, should have been stopped by Owain Fon Williams and could only have taken a bobble before it rolled over the goalkeeper.

It sparked something out of the Premiership visitors as Cole took it upon himself to carry the baton, skipping past Cooper again and sliding in an equaliser.

Inverness continued in the same vein at the start of the second half, with Doumbouya bringing a smart save out of Waters after meeting a Doran cross. Boden was then denied by a combination of Darryl McHardy and Daniel Moore before Doumbouya contrived to head wide from four yards when Doran picked him out.

Doumbouya headed against the bar from a similar distance two minutes later but finally showed a clinical touch, planting a header from Doran's cross past Waters on 67 minutes.

Caley Thistle fans were afforded a first sighting of new signing Anier late on, and despite Vigurs hitting the bar from a free-kick, they had enough to hold on.

Dunfermline advanced into the fifth round of the Scottish Cup with a 3-2 victory at Alloa.

Nicky Clark, Paul McMullan and Joe Cardle netted as the Championship outfit held off a late rally from the hosts to extend their unbeaten run to 10 matches.

Clark broke the deadlock in the 12th minute with his ninth goal of the season, converting from close range after Neil Parry parried Gavin Reilly's effort, before McMullan fired in the second shortly before half-time.

After substitute Cardle's smart finish in the area just after the hour mark made it 3-0, Stefan McCluskey pulled one back for the League One side before Greig Spence set up a nervy finish at the death.

Peter MacDonald and Dylan Bikey each bagged a brace as Stirling and Clyde drew 2-2 in their Scottish Cup fourth-round clash.

Stirling opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Bikey's effort was deflected into the back of Clyde goalkeeper John Gibson's net.

The visitors were back on level terms 15 minutes later when veteran striker MacDonald fired in from the middle of the box.

MacDonald put Clyde in front in the 62nd minute when he beat Stirling shot-stopper Cameron Binnie from close range but he saw his penalty saved 15 minutes later after he was fouled in the box.

And Clyde were made to pay for that in the 84th minute when Bikey levelled things up from the middle of the area to force a replay.

Nicki Paterson's first goal of the season earned East Fife a 1-0 Scottish Cup fourth-round win over Livingston.

Livingston had an early opportunity when a superb cross from Nicky Cadden was met by Raffaele De Vita but he stabbed over from close range.

And moments later Ryan Goodfellow turned Liam Buchanan's header behind as Livingston enjoyed the better of the game.

East Fife went ahead in the 27th minute against the run of play with a superb volley from 25 yards from Paterson, which flew past Liam Kelly into the top corner.

A superb save from Goodfellow prevented Cadden levelling as he got his fingers to a 30-yard Cadden free-kick to turn it around the post.

Dale Carrick came within inches of finding an equaliser with two minutes remaining but saw his effort smash back off the crossbar.
