Aaron Hughes becomes Ian Cathro's first Hearts signing
The Northern Ireland defender joins alongside former Hamilton full-back Lennard Sowah.
Aaron Hughes has become Ian Cathro's first signing as Hearts head coach after signing a deal until the end of the season.
The 37-year-old is a free agent following his departure from Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters and links up with Northern Ireland coach Austin MacPhee at Tynecastle.
Hughes' arrival comes following former captain Alim Ozturk's return to Tukey to join second division side Boluspor.
Hughes, who has earned more than 100 caps for Northern Ireland. started his career at Newcastle United and then Aston Villa before becoming a cult hero at Fulham during a seven-year stint at Craven Cottage between 2007 and 2014.
He told the club's website: "Northern Ireland are obviously in the middle of a World Cup campaign and I was looking to come back and play at a level that will enable me to stay involved with the national team.
"So that was the idea behind coming back to the UK and obviously Hearts then came in for me and I believe this club is at a good level.
"The question I keep asking myself is whether I'm motivated to carry on and I certainly am. I feel fit and I'm motivated to play for as long as I can.
"It's something new for me, which is what attracted me to come here. There's a lot to play for here and we're in a good position.
"The first half of the season has been fairly good and I believe there are exciting times ahead here."
Hearts have also completed a deal for ex-Hamilton Accies full-back Lennard Sowah.
