MK Dons have approached Hearts for permission to speak to head coach Robbie Neilson, the Scottish Premiership side have confirmed.

The English League One outfit remain on the hunt for a new manager following the sacking of Karl Robinson in October.

Robinson departed following a run of seven defeats in 15 games with the team just above the relegation zone.

Neilson, regarded as one of Scotland's most promising coaches, signed a new contract with Hearts in February. His current deal expires in 2018.

The 36-year-old, who played for Hearts from 1999 until 2009, won promotion in his debut season as a boss before guiding the Jam Tarts to third on their return to the Scottish Premiership last term.

They currently sit fourth in the table with 23 points from their opening 14 league games.

A Hearts statement read: "The club can confirm that MK Dons have made an official approach to Heart of Midlothian in relation to head coach Robbie Neilson.

"Robbie is aware of the approach but he remains fully focused on the immediate task at hand, which is of course Rangers at home on Wednesday.

"No further comment or statement will be made by the club until after this match."

Former Liverpool and England midfielder Steven Gerrard held talks over the role but said it was "too soon" to make the step into the world of management.
