Erik Sviatchenko believes Celtic restored some European pride in their 2-0 Champions League defeat against Barcelona.

The Danish defender was part of the side, which lost out 7-0 in Spain when the teams met in the opening round of group matches and called that display "embarrassing".

However the 25-year-old felt the Scottish champions showed signs of their true quality as Lionel Messi's double brought Celtic's European adventure to an end for this term.

Asked if the squad has made amends for events in Catalonia, Sviatchenko replied: "Definitely.

"I think performance wise it was much better than the game away in Barcelona. Even though the result is pointless but the performance is something we can build on."

Sviatchenko was unable to prevent Messi getting on the end of Neymar's pass to open the scoring after 24 minutes and he admits the goal was a glimpse of Barcelona's overall attacking quality.

He added: "It was a good pass. Sometimes you know it is happening but your legs and your mind does not respond in some way because sometimes it happens so quickly.

"That's why they are the best players in the world and that's why we always want to compete with them because it's a learning phase especially for us defenders."

Barcelona started with their famous 'MSN' attack of Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar and Sviatchenko described the challenge of facing such a potent forward trio.

He said: "It's a big challenge. It's the concentration levels which need to be top because two things can happen in an instant and that's why you need to take a decision.

"Sometimes it's a bit difficult."
