Andy Murray will become world number one if he reaches the final of the Paris Masters.

Novak Djokovic's loss to Marin Cilic in the last eight of the competition has cleared the path for the Scot to become the first British man to reach the summit of tennis since Fred Perry in 1941.

Murray defeated Tomas Berdych in his quarter final on Friday night and is just one win from taking the title.

He will now face either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Milos Raonic in the semi final.

Djokovic lost 6-4 7-6 in straight sets on Friday afternoon, saving two match points in the second set before finally relenting in a tiebreak.

The Serbian has spent 122 consecutive weeks as world number one. The new standings will be confirmed on Monday morning.

Should Murray fail to reach the final, he could still claim the world number one spot by the end of the year at the ATP World Tour Finals.
