Brendan Rodgers says "super bright" Stuart Armstrong deserves all the credit for reviving his Celtic career as he backed the midfielder to win a Scotland recall.

After a bright start to life in Glasgow following his move from Dundee United, the 24-year-old endured a tough second season under Ronny Deila but has forced his way into Rodgers' plans this term.

Armstrong helped create Moussa Dembele's winner during Sunday's Old Firm clash before producing a goal and an assist during the 4-0 win over Ross County.

Rodgers expressed his joy at working with the Inverness-born midfielder, saying: "He's played a lot of his time here on the left side which I can understand why coaches and managers would play him there because he's very diligent, he works well and he has an eye for goal.

"We spoke to him a lot in pre-season in terms of his positioning and where he felt most comfortable and at that time it was maybe difficult for him to get a game in his preferred position.

"What he's done is, each day from that, he's looked to improve, get better and understand the tactical element of playing on the inside."

Rodgers added: "What he's got is wonderful intelligence, he's a good footballer and he's improving tactically all the time.

"Technically he's strong, you see with his finish last night and I see it in training every day. He's got a wonderful strike on him - he has different types of finishes in him and he's got goals in him.

"Physically he's very good. Our first goal came from his ability to counter press the ball very quickly and allow Patrick to run through. For his goal, he spotted the space, great speed and then a wonderful finish.

"It's never easy, he's come into one of the biggest clubs in the world and it takes time to adapt and find your feet and he's definitely found his feet. He's a player I really enjoy working with.

"He's super bright so he thinks about the game, his role in the team and he's starting to flourish now and it is all down to him."

Squad rotation from the Scottish champions has allowed Armstrong to adapt to a number of different roles this term and the Celtic boss says the player's adaptability is one of his key assets.

Rodgers said: "I see him in any one of the three central midfield areas whether it's a number ten or just sat in behind.

"When he came on in the League Cup semi-final he played beside Scott Brown and you saw his pace, energy and his ability to burst through.

"He played last night as one of the two players sitting in midfield but he can also play in that advanced role as well."

Rodgers added: "He's come on in a number of games for me in that ten position so I think anywhere centrally where he can use his power and pace to break forward then that is his best position.

"Hopefully over the coming years you will really see the benefit of it."

With Gordon Strachan preparing for Scotland's World Cup qualifying clash with England in November, Armstrong's return to form could earn him a first international call since August 2015.

Rodgers believes maintaining his current levels will lead to recognition at Hampden.

"He's got the physical qualities for that," Rodgers said.

"At that level it is obviously about understanding the game tactically.

"He's a bright boy and takes on information well and if he keeps going, improving and keeps on showing the level there's no question he can feature for his national team."

Rodgers isn't the only man at Lennoxtown to see a difference in Armstrong's displays with captain Scott Brown giving his fellow midfielder a ringing endorsement.

He said: "Stuart looks a lot more positive going forward. He's got great pace and great ability as well. His goal was fantastic, it just finished his day off to be honest.

"He can play higher up the park, he can play in front of the back four as well, he's a really intelligent footballer.

"He's learning the game, as we all are as well, but he's young, he's got the legs and he loves being a part of this squad and under this manager.

"He's improving week in week out and I think that's the way everyone here is going. It's always hard for competition but when Stuarty gets his chance he's shown yet again he can provide.

"The whole team is a lot stronger, we're looking a lot better this season. I've seen a lot of improvement in James Forrest, myself as well this season with being fit so it's good to come in."
