St Mirren have been granted permission to speak to Alloa Athletic's Jack Ross over the current managerial vacancy at the Paisley club.

Buddies chairman Gordon Scott watched the Wasps' Scottish League One match against Airdrieonians on Saturday.

It is understood St Mirren intend to speak to one other candidate as they look to find Alex Rae's replacement following the former Rangers midfielder's sacking as manager of the club two weeks ago.

Ross has enjoyed a positive start to the season at Alloa Athletic, with the Wasps only knocked from top spot in Scottish League One after Saturday's defeat to Airdrieonians.

Third tier Alloa also impressed in the League Cup against Celtic, only losing 2-0 to the Scottish Premiership champions away from home.

The 40-year-old played for St Mirren as a player, making 64 appearances for the Paisley club between 2008 and 2010.
