Alan Solomons has stepped down as Edinburgh Rugby head coach, with Duncan Hodge named as his acting replacement.

The 66-year-old resigned as boss of the Murrayfield with immediate effect after failing to make much progress in the capital over three years in charge of the club.

The news of Solomons' resignation came on the same day outgoing Scotland head coach Vern Cotter confirmed that he will be joining Montpellier.

Despite criticism of his management, Solomons was handed a contract extension last season until June 2017.

However, the former Northampton and Ulster boss has decided to cut short his spell in charge of Edinburgh Rugby, with former Scotland international Hodge stepping in on an interim basis.

"Alan came in as head coach at a difficult time in Edinburgh Rugby's history and helped to stabilise and strengthen the club," Scottish Rugby chief executive Mark Dodson.

"He achieved some notable successes including leading the first Scottish team to a European Final of the Challenge Cup in 2015 and back to back 1872 Scottish Cup victories over Glasgow Warriors.
