Gordon Strachan denies Lithuania qualifier is a must win game
The Scotland boss named his squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Gordon Strachan doesn't believe next month's World Cup qualifier against Lithuania is a must-win game for Scotland.
The Scotland boss named his squad for the upcoming qualifiers against Lithuania and Slovakia, with Shaun Maloney the only new inclusion.
Leigh Griffiths was also included after recovering from a hamstring injury, with Oliver Burke selected after scoring his first goal for new club RB Leipzig at the weekend.
But having won their opening group game against Malta earlier this month Strachan insists three points at home against Lithuania on October 8 is not a requirement if Scotland are to make it to Russia 2018.
"No," he responded when asked whether it was a must-win game. "The Slovenian coach says that if anyone else goes to Lithuania and gets points they'll be doing well.
"I watched the Poland game, the one they drew, and they have talented players. But I think Scottish people now understand... 10 years ago they couldn't accept that Lithuanian had good players and a good team.
So I think we're all understanding, even the press, that they might not be a well-known football country, but they still produce some good footballers and teams.
"They've got a smaller squad which keeps them together, and I'm sure they've got a good team spirit about them. You'll see some good individual players."
