Brendan Rodgers has vowed Celtic's youngsters won't be scarred by the 7-0 Champions League loss to Barcelona, the heaviest European defeat in the club's history.

Lionel Messi hit a hat-trick while Luis Suarez found the net twice as the Catalan giants ran riot at the Camp Nou in the Group C opener.

Neymar and Andres Iniesta also found the net on a night to forget for the Scottish champions in Spain.

Asked if the result could have a lasting damaging effect on his squad for the rest of the campaign, Rodgers said: "No they won't be. This gives them great motivation going forward because if you want to go and play at the top level then you have to play to that level of technique and quality.

"There were long periods in the first half where our shape worked quite well but when you have that overall quality it is very tough to contain that. Maybe that tiredness especially towards the latter part of the second half took its toll."

Messi took three minutes to open his account in Europe's top club competition with Moussa Dembele offered the chance to draw Celtic level from the penalty spot after being brought down by Ter Stegen.

However the German goalkeeper made amends with a save before Messi doubled Barca's advantage at the break.

While Rodgers was full of praise for the hosts, he believes Dembele's miss could have changed his team's mindset during the match.

He added: "Obviously we gave away an early goal and we had a chance to come back into it and I think you need to take those opportunities.

"For the game to go to 1-1 it gives them something to think about and our boys energy in the game and a bit of motivation. Of course we don't score the penalty and not long after that they score the second goal.

"At half-time we said the next goal was going to be important and if you can get to 2-1 it can bring a bit of edginess to it. The reality is in the second half we never really looked like scoring."
