Celtic assistant manager Chris Davies says his side are heading to Camp Nou confident they can take points off Barcelona in the opening game of the Champions League group stages.

The Scottish champions travelled to Spain on Monday ahead of their first Group C fixture after a resounding 5-1 win against Glasgow rivals Rangers at the weekend.

Davies stresses Celtic are not in the tournament just to make up the numbers and will be going into each of their matches to compete with some of Europe's best sides.

Barcelona lost 2-1 to Alaves in La Liga on Saturday but the Englishman says it's his own side's form that has helped boost the team spirit so much.

"We can take a lot of confidence into this game," he said, speaking at Glasgow Airport. "We obviously had the pre-season friendly against them which was probably good for us because it gave our players a feel for being up and around their players.

"And we're in great form. I've no doubt Barcelona will be respecting the level we will bring. Hopefully we can grow into the game and win some points.

"The level of our play, the goals that we're scoring, how creative we're looking and how organised we're looking - we are confident we can go anywhere and get points so that's what we will take into the game.

"We earned the right to be here. We've had some difficult games and the players deserve it, we all deserve it. The fans deserve it and so do the club.

"We passed some difficult tests on the route here, especially in early pre-season as well. It's not like we've had the whole season to prepare for these games. They came really fast.

"We've done excellent to get here but we make it very clear we're not just happy to be here, we're not just here for the ride. We're here to perform and compete and that's what we'll do."
