Swimmer Andrew Mullen takes first Scots Rio Paralympic medal
The 19-year-old Glaswegian won the bronze medal in the 200m freestyle S5 event on Thursday.
Swimmer Andrew Mullen has become the first Scot to win a medal at the Rio Paralympics.
The 19-year-old Glaswegian won the bronze medal in the 200m freestyle S5 event.
His performance was part of a dazzling display by Team GB Paralympians on day one of the competition.
There were ten medals in Rio, including Dame Sarah Storey wining the 3,000m individual pursuit final, her 12th gold medal.
Storey surpassed former wheelchair racer Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson as the British female with the most Paralympic titles by winning the C5 three-kilometres individual pursuit in the velodrome.
The honour of Britain's first medal of the XV Paralympics went to Megan Giglia, who won gold in the C1-2-3 3km individual pursuit minutes prior to Storey, who won ahead of team-mate Crystal Lane.
Sportscotland chief Stewart Harris, who watched the Scots teenager clinch the bronze, said: "That was a brilliant performance by Andrew Mullen in the pool, and I'm absolutely thrilled that he has won his first Paralympic medal on the first day of competition in Rio.
"Four years ago in London, Andrew did incredibly well to have two fourth places at just fifteen years old, so he'll be delighted to go one better and win bronze and claim a British record in doing so.
"It is a great honour for him to be the first Scot on ParalympicsGB to win a medal in Rio. It is a terrific start for him and the team, and I believe that Rio can be a really successful Games for Scottish athletes."
