Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers believes Scott Brown has made the "right decision" by retiring from international football.

The 31-year-old announced on Friday that he will no longer play for Scotland, quitting the national team to prolong his club career with Celtic.

Brown revealed that recent injuries played a part in his decision to call it a day for Scotland, and Rodgers believes the midfielder has made the right call.

"It's the right decision for him," said the Hoops boss. "Obviously it was a very difficult decision for him as he's a passionate man about his country. He's very close with Gordon Strachan and it was a really tough decision."

"It's the right move. He's into the final chapter of his career and he'll want to give those best times to Celtic. When you play 60-70 games a season you need to look after your body."

"He's been a wonderful footballer for Scotland, 50 caps, lots of players who do that have good careers. It's sad when it comes to an end, but it's good news for Celtic supporters as it means he can be physically and mentally right."

"He's entering really good years and will still be able to play but there comes a time where it can take a toll on your body.

"There comes a point that you've got to look at it and think; one team has to benefit here, rather than two teams suffering."
