Katherine Grainger has become Great Britain's most decorated female Olympian after claiming silver in the women's double sculls final.

The 40-year-old finished second with partner Vicky Thornley behind the Polish pair after a strong final 500m in a thrilling race in Brazil.

The result means Grainger has won medals at five successive games, taking her total to one gold and four silvers.

Grainger had considered walking away from the sport before performing a U-turn and the pair only reached Rio when spots became available after failing to make the initial cut.

Midway through the season she and 28-year-old Thornley reformed as a partnership after trying to gain a seat in the eight section.

After finishing as runner up in 2000, 2004 and 2008, the Scot was victorious with Anna Watkins in the double sculls with Anna Watkins.
