Aston Villa winger Scott Sinclair has edged closer to joining Celtic with the two clubs agreed a fee of close to £4m for the winger, STV understands.

The 27-year-old has been a long-term target for manager Brendan Rodgers, who worked with the attacker during his time at Swansea City and Chelsea.

Now the Scottish champions have their man subject to a medical being completed over the weekend. Celtic are preparing to kick off their title defence against Hearts as well as the Champions League play-off against Hapoel Be'er Sheva. Scott Allan's loan move to Rotherham means Sinclair could be added to the squad for the clash later this month.

After earning a big-money to move to Manchester City in 2012, the former England U21 international was forced into loan moves to West Brom and Villa in a bid to gain first-team football.

A permanent move to Villa Park followed but relegation to the Championship has led Sinclair to look for a transfer away.
