Mark Warburton has admitted he is "bemused and amused" by speculation linking Rangers with a move for Robin Van Persie.

Suggestions that the former Arsenal and Manchester United forward was close to joining the Ibrox club spread on social media on Wednesday night, with one bookmakers even suspending betting on the transfer happening.

However, the episode left Warburton perplexed, with the Englishman denying that he even made an enquiry about the Fenerbahce striker reported to be earning more than £100,000 a week in Turkey.

"I wonder what the first question will be," laughed Warburton as he sat down for the media conference at the Rangers Football Centre.

"I have no idea where the rumour has emanated from. I woke up to a barrage of texts and missed calls, with apparently the deal done.

"Everybody knew about it apart from the people at Rangers Football Club.

"Out of our pay league I think is a fair comment.

"He's an unbelievably talented player but absolutely nothing in it whatsoever. I'm bemused to hear some of the stories, including betting being suspended.

"There is no truth in the story whatsoever.

"These stories do entertain me. I don't know where these things come from. I'm sure someone is laughing somewhere."
