Hearts are hoping to complete a season-long loan deal for former Celtic striker Tony Watt.

The Edinburgh side face competition for Watt's signature from Rotherham United - managed by former Hibs boss Alan Stubbs - but STV understands the 22-year-old wants to return north to Scotland to be closer to his family.

The Scotland international spent two spells away from Charlton Athletic last season on loan at Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers.

He scored eight goals in 34 first team appearances for Celtic after excelling at youth level but failed to settle in Belgium when he moved in 2013.

Scotland assistant manager Mark McGhee delivered a scathing assessment of the youngster in March, accusing him of not being fit enough.

Watt was included in the Scotland squad for the friendly win against Czech Republic but wasn't included for the following three international fixtures.
