Andy Murray claims second Wimbledon title after beating Milos Raonic
The Scot secured his third Grand Slam crown after a straight sets victory on Centre Court.
Andy Murray has won his second Wimbledon title after beating Milos Raonic in a thrilling final.
The Scot produced a sensational display to defeat the Canadian 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) in two hours and 48 minutes in front of a packed Centre Court crowd.
It's Murray's third Grand Slam title after winning the US Open in 2012 as well as ending Britain's 77-year wait for a Wimbledon men's singles champion back in 2013.
Playing in his first Grand Slam final, Raonic showed few signs of nerves as he fended off an early break point in the third game of the match. However he couldn't stop the Scot making his move in the seventh game as a missed volley at the net saw Murray take a 4-3 lead.
And he closed out the opener with a solid volley to the delight of the home crowd. Raonic seemed rattled; yelling in disgust after a double fault forced him to scramble to hold in the opening game of the second set.
The tension continued to mount as Murray spurned break points in successive games but it wasn't to matter as the British number one showed his steely determination. A sensational display of tactical nous and defensive skills saw him take the tie break 7-3.
Murray had beaten the 25-year-old in last month's Queen's Club final and his opponent was determined to push him all the way.
But the sixth seed couldn't halt Murray's charge as the 29-year-old dominated another tie break to clinch the championship.
Murray's win capped a successful day for Scots at SW19 as Gordon Reid became the tournament's first wheelchair singles winner after claiming the doubles title with Alfie Hewitt on Saturday.
