Iceland secured a 1-1 draw with Portugal on their major tournament debut.

The smallest nation to qualify for the European Championships, Iceland came close to taking the lead when Gylfi Sigurdsson shot straight at Rui Patricio.

They were made to pay when former Manchester United winger Nani gave Portugal the lead on the half hour mark with a well-placed finish.

Portugal could have extended their lead but were denied by a mixture of slack finishing and some stubborn defending.

Iceland responded in the second half and gained their first tournament goal through a fine volley from Birkir Bjarnason.

Neither side could find a winner as Hungary remain at the top of Group F following their 2-0 victory over Austria.
