Glasgow Warriors have received the green light for an artificial pitch to be installed at their Scotstoun Stadium home.

Glasgow City Council have approved the plans which will see the new playing surface laid later this month in time for the start of the 2016/17 season.

The installation of the new pitch will be funded by Glasgow Warriors, Scottish Rugby, Glasgow City Council and sportscotland, with the surface also set to be available for community use.

The grass pitch at the venue was unplayable for large chunks of last season, with Warriors forced to move a number of games to Rugby Park in Kilmarnock as a result.

"From next season we'll have an excellent surface all year round, to play the exciting brand of rugby we enjoy," Warriors managing director Nathan Bombrys said.

"It will also provide us with exciting opportunities, which will help us grow the club and the game in the west of Scotland.

"We have visited a number of clubs who have similar surfaces, which they either play or train on and we believe an artificial surface is the best solution for Scotstoun Stadium."

Warriors will follow the likes of Saracens, Cardiff Blues and Newcastle Falcons, who have all installed artificial pitches recently.
