Celtic chairman: Track record and desire behind Rodgers choice
Ian Bankier says Brendan Rodgers will know Celtic job is no "easy gig".
Celtic chairman Ian Bankier has said that the club's board were impressed by Brendan Rodgers' achievements and his appetite for the job as they appointed him as manager.
The former Liverpool boss was confirmed as Ronny Deila's successor on Friday and the move represents a coup for the Scottish champions.
Rodgers, who took Liverpool to within a whisker of the Premier League title, will be tasked with bringing both European and domestic success to Celtic.
Bankier said he was as keen on Celtic as the club were on him and that he believed the fans would turn out to get behind the new man in charge.
"He absolutely positively wanted the job," Bankier told STV. "I think that was a great indication of where he was coming from.
"His track record, his capability and his desire [were all attractive].
"We would expect a positive response [from the supporters] and there's no reason why not."
The club chairman said that there was no demand for heavy investment in the squad to meet Rodgers' vision for the future and pointed to Deila's last match as an indication of the talent available to work with.
"I think anyone who attended the 7-0 game against Motherwell would agree that we've got a good squad of players," he said. "That's not the issue.
"He hasn't made any special emphasis of that but it goes without saying that on the football side the manager, whoever that is, would have complete control of that side of the business.
"Celtic's not an easy gig. I think he knows that and he'll have done his homework on us like we've done ours on him so he has to make up his mind.
"We want to see him hit the ground running and there's no reason why he won't."
