'I wanted to strangle Cummings' jokes Hibs coach after Hampden win
Alan Stubbs paid tribute to his striker for returning to the spot to put his team in the final.
Hibernian manager Alan Stubbs expressed his delight at reaching the Scottish Cup final but joked that he wanted "to strangle" striker Jason Cummings after a first half penalty miss.
Hibs came out on top at Hampden after 120 minutes of football against Dundee United failed to produce a goal but debut keeper Conrad Logan saved twice in the penalty shootout to put his side through.
Jason Cumming scored the final penalty to seal a 4-2 shootout victory but the forward had earlier missed a golden chance to take command of the match. He tried a "Panenka" chip after being awarded a first-half penalty only to put it over the bar and Stubbs said there wouldn't be a repeat in another big game.
"I wanted to strangle him, initially," the Hibs head coach said.
"I didn't see it. I went into the toilet. Normally when I go in, even at Easter Road, you normally hear a cheer but I heard a groan as I came out so I knew he had missed.
"I didn't know how he had missed but when I got back a few of the lads were shaking their heads and saying he had tried to dink it.
"If he practises them in training and has done that type of penalty before then I go fair enough but I will be telling him not to be doing that in semi-finals or finals."
Despite having missed at a crucial moment, Cummings volunteered to take a pressure penalty in the shootout and Stubbs said it was proof of the striker's character that he stepped up again.
"If Jason had said no my jaw would have dropped," he said.
"I would have been completely surprised. Nothing fazes him.
"The only thing I was maybe concerned about is that he was starting to cramp up.
"But not for one second after that whistle had gone did I ever think he was not going to take a penalty.
"I can't question him. He has bundles of personality and character."
