Andy Halliday says Rangers must challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next term after sealing promotion to the top flight.

A 1-0 over Dumbarton secured the Championship title for the Ibrox men, who have thrived following the arrival of manager Mark Warburton.

Midfielder Halliday, a summer arrival following his departure from Bradford, celebrated with the fans following the title triumph before setting his goals for 2016/17.

He said: "We've got to be challenging for the title, it is as simple as that.

"That's not me being arrogant or disrespectful to Celtic at all. They have won four-in-a-row and are going for another title but you can't be at a club like this and be happy in second."

The 24-year-old boyhood Rangers fan reflected on how far the team has progressed since the early days of Warburton's reign.

He added: "It was a team and squad that wasn't in great shape off the back end of last year and the gaffer came in with Davie [Weir] and put a squad together and stamped their philosophy very early.

"We managed to get the players we wanted in early and as I said I think we've been top since the first day of pre-season. Maybe over the last few weeks our performances haven't been as fluid but we're still doing the right things in training.

"Trust me we're just going to get better and better for next season."
