Jamie Murray a 'British tennis legend' after becoming world number one
Leon Smith hailed the perseverance and determination of the Dunblane doubles ace.
Jamie Murray will go down as a British tennis legend according to Great Britain's Davis Cup captain Leon Smith.
The Dunblane ace secured his place as the number one ranked men's doubles player in the world this week after Marcelo Melo lost in the second round of the Miami Open on Sunday.
Murray's success follows on from his triumph alongside Bruno Soares at the Australian Open earlier this year, marking a remarkable 12 months for the Scot.
"He will absolutely be a British tennis legend, there's no doubt about it," Smith told STV in light of the news.
"What he's achieved, he won that mixed doubles title at Wimbledon all those years ago and everybody had such high hopes for him.
"To see it take this amount of time, it's really a story of perseverance and working hard.
"It's a great message to say you've got to stick with it and good things can happen.
"He'll go down in the history books for what he has achieved now, but what he is going to achieve moving forwards as well."
