Rangers striking sensation Martyn Waghorn believes he can finish top goalscorer in Britain at the end of the season.

The Englishman is on 27 goals in 32 appearances so far, just two behind Celtic's Leigh Griffiths who currently tops the leaderboard across the home nations.

Peterhead's Rory McAllister is close to Waghorn on 26 goals while Leyton Orient's Jay Simpson leads down south with 22 strikes to his name.

Waghorn has never finished a campaign top scorer before but while he admits he hasn't been at his best in recent fixtures he says there's more to come from him in front of goal.

"I had a chance late on against Kilmarnock when my touch wasn't quite there, on another day it would have went in," he said. "But it's my job to put the ball in the areas to get the three points and we're doing that.

"It's nice to be up there and I want to keep going and see how many I can get, but it's coming towards the business end of the season and the wins and progression in the cups are more important.

"It would be nice [to finish top goalscorer in Britain], I don't see why I couldn't. There's a lot of other fantastic players around Europe and in Britain though so I'll keep doing my job and the goals are a real bonus."

The Geordie was reluctant to be compared to Griffiths, however, saying the Celtic striker went into the current campaign with different targets.

"He's in the Premier League, I'm down here and I'm doing my job for Rangers," he said. "He's doing his job for Celtic and while he's doing well for them I'm doing well for Rangers as well.

"He has different aims and objectives for his personal season. I have mine, I want to get Rangers promoted and as far as I can in the cups.

"I came here with the mindset of scoring goals but it wasn't my first priority, it was to get Rangers back to where they belong."
