Sean Maitland ready for massive Calcutta Cup clash against England
Scots grandparents taught fullback of intense rivalry with the Auld Enemy
Sean Maitland says the emotion of the Calcutta Cup will never be lost on him - because his Scottish grandparents taught him all about the intense rivalry with the England rugby team.
The New Zealand-born winger was brought up watching the Six Nations on television and he's aiming for a first win over England this weekend.
Maitland made the switch to his Glaswegian relatives' homeland in 2013, and reveals they factored heavily in his attitude towards Saturday's RBS 6 Nationns opponents.
"My grandparents made it pretty clear that I had to hate the English," Maitland joked. "Not many people in New Zealand like the English as well."
Maitland anticipates an 'unbelievable atmosphere' at Murrayfield and hopes to feature for the second time against England this weekend - the first occasion being his international debut at Twickenham.
The 27-year-old took just nine minutes to mark up his first try against the Red Rose, but England took control of the game and put a dampner on Maitland's bow, with the match finishing 38-18
"It was mixed emotions that day, making my debut and scoring a try, but we got put away by a good England team" he reflected.
Injuries have ruled the London Irish player out of the two encounters since then, but Saturday's match will allow him and his Scotland team-mates the chance to claim the Calcutta Cup from the first time since 2008.
"Now we are just focusing on us" Maitland analysed, "we are not worrying about results and what happened in the past. We are just working on how we are going to beat England."
