Hearts have bid for Dundee United teenager John Souttar rejected
The Edinburgh side made an approach for the 19-year-old, who is out of contract this summer.
Hearts have been unsuccessful with an offer to sign Dundee United youngster John Souttar.
STV understands the Edinburgh club made an offer for the 19-year-old, which was rejected by United.
Highly-rated Souttar, who can play in defence or midfield, is reaching the end of his contract at Tannadice and is free to talk to other clubs about a summer move.
Compensation would be due to United for training the player, provided he is offered an improved new deal.
Hearts' bid was to sign the player immediately to bolster Robbie Neilson's squad as the club continue to push for a European place.
A Hearts spokesperson told STV: "We do not comment or speculate on players at other clubs."
Souttar, who has represented Scotland at Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 level, has attracted the interest of Celtic in the past and has already made over 60 appearances for the Tangerines.
He made his debut in 2013 and has gone on to establish himself at first team level, playing 20 matches for the side this season.
