SPFL clubs have vowed to continue discussions over league reconstruction after holding initial talks at Hampden.

Falkirk are at the forefront of calls to change the current set-up, which sees a 12-team top flight with three lower divisions of 10 sides.

The Bairns believe the Scottish Premiership should be expanded and several of their SPFL counterparts gave their views at the national stadium.

He said: "I’m confident that the SPFL clubs recognise the need to look at the game, look at the structure, look at the issues affecting football and the easiest thing to do in any business is do nothing.

"That normally means that you start going downhill and we’ve got to make sure we’re going forward, going uphill and that means addressing the issues of the day."

She said: "I think you have to reflect on it. In terms of the league set up at the minute, it does what many of us have wanted it to do.

"It creates lots of excitement etc, promotion and relegation and the league is interesting right until the end of the season so it does what it is supposed to do.

"Are we happy in the position in the league set up we’re in? No of course we’re not, I’m not going to say that but I think it’s better than what we have had for many years.

"There may be something different, there may be something better and if and when that comes towards us then we’ll participate in that."

He said: "It was very much an opening gambit today.

"They have raised it as something they are going to discuss going forward so we’ll have a sensible discussion about some of the key points that we need to look at; commercial aspects, supporters’ views taking them into account.

"Today was very much a starter for 10 I would say in terms of the dialogue starting.

"As a board we have had so many other things to pick up recently that we are going to discuss it very soon so that will fit in quite well with the timing of the general discussions."

He said: "I think it is quite a good, competitive league, look from fourth to eleventh.

"If someone could come back with something that’s competitive then we’re in an entertainment business and we’ve got to entertain.

"Whatever is the most competitive and whatever gives the fans what they want is the correct [way].

"I haven’t yet seen a proposal whether it is 10, 12, 14, 18 I think as long as the fans are involved then I think it’ll be fine."

He said: "I think in general you have got to look at what you are trying to achieve. The top 12 is very, very competitive as is the top of the Championship.

"Apart from the split, which I’m not a great fan of then I don’t think there’s a lot wrong with it at the moment.

"The problem is we’ve discussed 14-team league, a 16-team league, 18-team league in previous years and there’s not been much appetite.

"Now I’m open minded and if someone can do a presentation and convince me that a 16, 18 or 14 team league will work and tick all the boxes for broadcasters, fans, football managers and getting young players through.

"If someone can do that presentation, regardless of how many teams are in the league then I’d embrace it."

She said: "I think there’s an element of the grass is always greener so it is very easy to be critical of what we have in place at the minute but we really have to look at how perhaps we could do it better.

"I think it is important to remember the big picture.

"I don’t think it’s a matter of looking at things in isolation.

"The question should be how can we make Scottish football more compelling to more fans so that we can get more fans coming back?

"That’s the issue I think we should be addressing rather than specific points."
