Celtic have confirmed the signing of Danish centre-back Erik Sviatchenko on a four-and-a-half year deal from FC Midtjylland.

The 24-year-old underwent a medical ahead of the move on Saturday, as Ronny Deila adds to his defensive ranks in the January transfer window.

Sviatchenko is the club's first signing of the January transfer window for a fee in the region of £1.5m, having been linked with the Scottish Premiership champions during the summer.

“I have had a taste of winning with Midtjylland and I want more of this feeling at Celtic," the defender said.

"When you play football, you want to be remembered for winning and I want to be remembered as a winner with Celtic.

“I know we have a squad of really talented players and I can’t wait to get started, team up with them and get to work.”

The 24-year-old has been a key player for Midtjylland, helping them to the Danish title in 2014/15 as well as securing progression to the last 32 stage of the Europa League where they will face Manchester United.

Sviatchenko has represented his country four times and is expected to compete for a place in the Celtic first team.
