The Scottish Government has failed to win a vote at Holyrood on its Budget, with Presiding Officer Ken Macintosh casting the crucial ballot.

Labour had put forward a motion to state the Parliament "does not support the Scottish Government's draft Budget 2017-18 in its current form", which was altered by an amendment from Finance Secretary Derek Mackay.

MSPs voted by 63 to 58, with five abstentions, in favour of the Government amendment, which stated that "constructive discussions on the 2017-18 Budget are continuing between the Scottish Government and other political parties with the objective of securing parliamentary support for it".

MSPs were tied 63 votes to 63 when they voted on the amended motion, with Mr Macintosh then voting against the motion as amended.

A Conservative amendment to the motion, which said "families and businesses in Scotland should not be taxed more than those elsewhere in the UK", was defeated by 30 votes to 96.

MSPs also voted down a Green amendment to the motion, which called for changes to be made to income tax policy "to raise revenue to protect public services and to reduce income inequality in Scotland".

This was defeated by 28 votes to 98.

A Liberal Democrat amendment calling for the Budget to include "additional investment" for schools, colleges, mental health services, the police and transport links with the Northern Isles, was also rejected by five votes to 121.
