The SNP have taken a seat from Labour following a by-election in a Glasgow council ward.

Chris Cunningham took the Garscadden and Scotstounhill seat following the death of John Kelly.

The result, announced on Thursday night, means the ruling Labour group on Glasgow city council has a majority of one seat.

With a turnout of 24%, the SNP took 43% of first preferences to Labour's 39%.

This represented a 23% drop in Labour's share of first preferences from the previous election.

SNP business convener Derek Mackay said: "This is a fantastic result and is the testament to the hard work of our candidate and activists who've overturned a huge Labour lead.

"This result will give us huge momentum ahead of next year's council elections but we take absolutely nothing for granted.

"We will keep on working hard to retain the trust of the Scottish people next year and to see more SNP councillors elected across the country."

Glasgow council's leader Frank McAveety congratulated Mr Cunningham and said there was "no greater honour than to serve Glasgow's citizens."

He tweeted that Labour's candidate Ian Cruikshank "took it to the wire".
