Voter registration for the referendum on EU membership will close at midnight on Tuesday.

The vote on whether the UK is to stay in or leave the European Union will be held on Thursday June 23.

The Electoral Commission launched a public awareness campaign regarding the referendum in May, and say that since then over 1.3 million people have applied online to register to vote.

The organisation also said under-25s and people between 25 and 34 "have consistently been the age groups making the most applications to register" since the initiative launched on May 15.

Chief counting officer for the EU referendum Jenny Watson said: "This really is your last chance! If you aren't already registered to vote, you need to do it by the June 7 deadline or you won't be able to take part in this historic referendum.

"Tens of thousands of people applied to register the day after the deadline to register for the General Election and were too late to have their say. Don't let that be you."

The Electoral Commission will also launch a joint campaign with Twitter on Monday to remind people to register to vote, which will allow users of the social media platform to tweet a neon tick emoji alongside the hashtag #EURefReady to indicate they have registered.

Research by the organisation suggests that prior to launching its public awareness campaign, one in three UK voters did not know the referendum was happening at all.

You can register to vote at www.registertovote.scot. You may need to have your National Insurance number or a valid UK passport to hand.

You can also update your name, address or other details on the electoral register, choose whether to vote in person or by post, or change whether you appear on the electoral roll.

16 and 17-year-olds will not be able to vote in this referendum.
