Workers from Tata Steel will travel to London today to urge the government to save their industry.

Union leaders will meet for emergency talks to discuss the next stage of their campaign less than a week after Tata announced it was selling its UK operation.

It was reported Marc and Nathaniel Meyohas, the brothers behind the Greybull investment firm, are set to bail out Tata's Scunthorpe steelworks for £400 million saving 9,000 jobs. However, this has not been confirmed.

Roy Rickhuss, head of steelworkers Union Community, said: "This meeting will be a key moment for us. .

"By now, no one underestimates the scale of the challenge we face. We have an entire industry to save and not a lot of time to save it.

"We must also ensure that we hold Tata to a commitment to be a responsible seller and honour its moral and social duties to UK steel communities."

Business Secretary Sajid Javid has signalled ministers are working on plans to reduce energy costs and take on some of the pension liabilities in an effort to attract a buyer for Tata's loss-making UK assets.

Javid faced calls to step down after he disclosed he was aware Tata had been meeting last week to discuss the future of its UK operations but he chose to go ahead with a trip to Australia.

Labour has said nationalisation should be an option to get he steel industry back on its feet - a notion which has been dismissed by the Prime Minister.
