Liberal Democrats pledge annual education spending rise
Party leader Willie Rennie will generate the funds by raising income tax rates by 1p.
Spending on education would rise every year under the Scottish Liberal Democrats, the party's leader Willie Rennie has said.
Rennie pledged to raise income tax rates by 1p to generate an additional £2.5bn for nurseries and colleges over the next five years.
Within the £2.5bn spending programme the party has set aside £475m for a "pupil premium" which would move additional resources to pupils who need more support.
The party claim this would be the equivalent of £1400 for every primary pupil that requires the support and £900 for every secondary school pupil.
However, the Lib Dem leader was unable to guarantee on BBC Radio Scotland's 'Good Morning Scotland' programme that local councils would spend the extra revenues on education.
Education is also at the heart of the other main parties at the Holyrood election.
