A boa constrictor found on a street in Aberdeen has died following extreme abuse.

A video posted on Facebook shows a woman picking up the snake, before waving it around and eventually throwing it to the ground.

She can be seen carrying out this act several times before the footage ends.

Police Scotland said that the snake was handed into them early on Wednesday after being found in the Aberdeen Beach area, but the injuries it had sustained were not visible.

The snake died on Thursday afternoon, and a post-mortem is currently taking place.

Officers are working with the Scottish SPCA to establish the full circumstances but are appealing for anyone who has information to get in touch.

Sergeant Jonathan Spence said: "Police Scotland has been made aware of a video circulating on social media which appears to show an incident involving the abuse of a snake.

"We are unable to confirm the exact time or date of the incident but enquiries are ongoing with the Scottish SPCA to establish the full circumstances.

"We would ask that anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information gets in contact with the Scottish SPCA or police.

"Sadly the snake has died this afternoon. The snake was found by a member of the public in the Aberdeen Beach area during the morning of Wednesday, 4 July, and was collected by the SSPCA."

Chief superintendent Mike Flynn from the animal welfare charity said: "In conjunction with Police Scotland we are currently investigating an incident involving a snake being thrown about a street in Aberdeenshire.

"Treating any animal this way is despicable behaviour and we are urgently seeking anyone with any information to call our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.

"Sadly the snake has now passed away and a post-mortem is being carried out in order to establish the cause of death."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland via 101 or Scottish SPCA on 03000 999 999.
