Dundonians are being encouraged to ditch their cars at an event to mark National Clean Air Day.

The city council is joining forces with NHS Tayside to run an awareness raising event at the penguins statues in the Overgate on Thursday.

Local bike firm Dr Bike will be on hand at the City Churches to provide advice and service cycles while Electric Bike Scotland will have some of their e-bikes on display.

Information about the dangers of pollution and the use of electric vehicles will also be available.

Alan Ross, council community safety convener, said: "Dundee's response to improving air quality is real and effective but not at the end of its journey yet.

"We lead the way in the use of electric vehicles, we are part of a project to pilot cleaner public transport, we invest in infrastructure that promotes cycling, walking and safer streets, and as a result aims to reduce car dependence.

"Dundee is also the home of the Mobility Innovation Living Laboratory (MILL) where organisations carry out real-world testing on some of the most innovative transportation technology and solutions on the planet.

"There are loads of small changes we can all make that will contribute to cleaner air in our city which when added together make a big difference to raising awareness about Clean Air Day, improving our air quality and with it the quality of our lives."

John Bynorth policy and communications officer at Environmental Protection Scotland, added: "The city is making great strides to improve air quality and inform the public about what they can do to help cut air pollution.

"The event's location in the heart of the city centre is perfect for office workers, families and shoppers to drop by and take part in this free event and we would encourage as many people as possible to come down on the day.

"Dundee - a city known for its technological innovation - is contributing hugely to the success of Clean Air Day by making the public aware of the choices they can make to help cut air pollution."
