An Aberdeenshire town remains the most expensive place to buy a home in Scotland, new research has found.

Properties in Westhill sell for an average of £250,787, around £75,000 more than the Scottish average of £174,712.

The Bank of Scotland study compared house prices across the country with their equivalents in 1998 - the year when Scotland last made the World Cup.

According to the research homes in Westhill came with an average price tag of £91,746 that year.

The biggest price hike over the past 20 years was in Inverness, with the 1998 average of £53,118 compared with £190,537 now.

Edinburgh prices also rose steeply, from £77,257 to £168,806.

Across Scotland, the average price of a house increased by 175% over the period.

Graham Blair, mortgage director at Bank of Scotland, said: "The increase in house prices in the capital shouldn't come as any shock but our research also shows a real boom in commuter areas such as Fife, with prices sky-rocketing over the last 20 years.

"Elsewhere, towns like Westhill near Aberdeen have seen the benefits of the oil and gas industry, with Westhill 2.7 times more expensive than in 1998."
