Beaches in Dundee and Angus have been named on a list of Scotland's top coastal spots.

Arbroath, Carnoustie, East Haven, Monifieth, Montrose Seafront, Lunan Bay and Broughty Ferry all made the Keep Scotland Beautiful best beaches list.

The charity's annual awards signal the start of the traditional Scottish bathing season in June and also act as a benchmark for local environment quality on Scotland's coastline.

Inspectors rate beaches on 25 criteria including cleanliness, accessibility and water quality.

This year, 61 beaches across Scotland made the final list.

Angus Council's communities vice-convener Lois Speed said: "From Montrose to Monifieth, our beaches are assets that we can all be proud of and enjoy.

"These awards are fitting recognition of the efforts of our staff and the many volunteers whose efforts allow us to enjoy all our shorefronts.

"The dedication of the community to our coastal attractions cannot be over-stated. They make a massive difference in ensuring our beaches are an attraction for tourists and residents alike."

Kevin Cordell, convener of Dundee City Council's neighbourhood services committee, called Broughty Ferry beach a "huge asset" for the city.

He added: "We tend to focus on the summer months when the weather is good, but beach management goes on all year round and work is continual towards the 25 criteria that must be met to achieve this high standard including well managed access and facilities, high standards of cleanliness, safety and community engagement reflecting the needs of users."
