Breathing new life into a once proud shopping street is one of the aims of this year's Dundee Design Festival.

Reform Street was once one of Dundee's most vibrant shopping thoroughfares, but like retail streets throughout the UK, its popularity has dwindled.

Now in its third year, the festival has previously been staged at an empty factor space at West Ward Works, but this year the main venue will be a former ladies fashion shop on Reform Street.

The shop exhibition called Factory Shop and will display products made by designers who were paired up with manufacturers involved in making hand tufted tapestries and rugs, glassware and sculptural sound devices.

With the opening of the V&A museum of design and Dundee's status as Britain's first UNESCO city of design, this is a subject that is assuming increasing importance.

Anna Day from UNESCO City of Design Dundee said: "It's about how design makes the world a better place, not just pretty tables and chairs, but the designs of your carpet, and the science that goes behind that and how these things combine to make your life better."

Dundee Design Festival runs from May 24 to May 29 as part of Dundee Design Month.
