A councillor is proposing to ban dogs from school playgrounds and play parks across Aberdeenshire.

Councillor Isobel Davidson has asked Aberdeenshire Council to put a policy into place because of dog owners' "lack of control" and irresponsibility with dog fouling.

The proposals wold see dogs banned from specific council owned premises such as school playgrounds, school playing fields and enclosed play parks where equipment is located.

There is currently an anti-dog fouling strategy in place that was approved in 2013, but Ms Davidson says this is not enough.

She said: "Currently the council has no policy, so the decision to put up 'No Dogs' signs is not made in any strategic way and has no policy backing."

Over the years Ms Davidson said she has had many complains about dog owners not behaving responsibly, particularly in school grounds.

Speaking to STV, she said that there would still be many other places where people can freely take dogs, like beaches and country parks, but locals have taken to Facebook to voice their disagreement.

Lynsey Penny said: "I often walk my dog and take kids to park at the same time or do school pick ups/drop off with the dog.

"Does that mean that I can't take my dog? I clean up after my dog so why can't others.

"These people ruin it for the rest and I don't see why the general responsible dog owners should be penalised."

Another concerned local, Kenny Winton, said: "Rubbish. You cant just generalise, not all dog owners are a nuisance."

However, a number of people voiced their support for the issue, with local Susan Dunn saying: "Absolutely! Dogs should not be allowed in play areas.

"There are plenty of places that dogs can go.

"Not every child is comfortable around dogs. My friend's child is terrified of dogs and will wet herself if one comes near her."

Members of the council's infrastructure services committee will consider the proposal on Thursday, May 10.
