Art centre fears over nine-screen multiplex cinema plan
As a charity, Dundee Contemporary Arts relies on income from its two cinema screens.
A Dundee independent cinema and arts charity said it is worried about the impact of a proposed new multiplex cinema complex.
Developers behind plans for the nine-screen cinema on the city's waterfront said it will boost the local economy.
But three thousand people have signed a petition concerned it could divert vital income from neighbouring Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA).
As a charity, the DCA relies on income from its two cinema screens, and there are fears its revenue could be hit hard.
Joe Lafferty, DCA chair, said: "We are worried.
"Nineteen out of 20 of our best-performing films last year were blockbusters.
"The money generated from these films comes straight back to Dundee and the DCA.
"It lets us do exciting programming work in cinema and in education.
"It's vital for us."
Lyall Bruce, a designer who works in the city, believes that many in the creative industries are worried about the impact on the DCA.
He said: "The DCA has a huge role to play in the waterfront development.
"You don't want to thank something for all its hard work by taking away one of its key strengths."
On Tuesday a public consultation was held in the city for people to see the plans, which also include restaurants and a hotel.
Developers Crucible Alba Group claim both the multiplex and the DCA can work together.
Development director Michael Smart said: "There are examples around the country of independent cinemas sitting beside multiplexes.
"They're targeting a different set of customers."
Plans are likely to be submitted later in the summer.
